Women’s health has come a long way in the last few decades, and continues to be an area of interest and growth in the healthcare world (as it should be!). At Bethany Medical Clinic, we believe that care is about more than treating symptoms, and women’s health is no exception. It’s about prevention, early detection, and empowering the women of New York to take control of their well-being. One of the most powerful tools in women’s preventive health is the Pap smear (or Pap test), a simple yet life-saving screening that has transformed the fight against cervical cancer.
What Is a Pap Smear?
A Pap smear is a screening test that collects cells from the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. These cells are examined under a microscope to detect changes that could lead to cervical cancer. Many of these changes are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection.
Most people with HPV never develop symptoms, which is why routine screening is so important. By detecting abnormal cells early, Pap smears give doctors the chance to treat issues before they turn into cancer.

Why Pap Smears Are So Important
Proven Cancer Prevention: Since Pap smears became standard in women’s health, cervical cancer rates in the U.S. have dropped by more than 50%.
Silent Changes, Early Detection: Cervical cell changes don’t usually cause pain or symptoms, meaning you may not know something is wrong without screening.
Peace of Mind: A quick, routine test provides reassurance and helps you stay proactive about your health!
When Should You Get a Pap Smear?
Guidelines vary depending on your age and health history, but general recommendations include:
- Ages 21–29: A Pap smear every 3 years
Ages 30–65: Pap smear every 3 years, or every 5 years if combined with HPV testing - 65+: Screening may not be needed if you’ve had regular normal results, but your provider will guide you
Your provider may recommend more frequent testing if you have a history of abnormal results, weakened immunity, or other health factors.

What to Expect During the Test
A Pap smear is quick, typically lasting just a few minutes. During the test, your provider gently collects cells from your cervix using a small brush or spatula. It may feel a little uncomfortable, but it’s usually not painful. Most women describe it as mildly awkward, but absolutely worth it for the health protection it provides.
