Sunscreen 101: Why It Matters, Myths to Ignore, and How to Choose the Right One

Sunscreen

Summer is the perfect time to get outside, but before you enjoy the sun, it’s crucial to protect your skin. At Bethany Medical Clinic, our dermatology team sees firsthand how UV damage can affect long-term skin health. Sunscreen is one of the easiest and most effective tools for preventing sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. Yet, many people still skip it or use it incorrectly.

Let’s break down why sunscreen matters, debunk common sunscreen myths, help you choose the right product, and explain how our dermatology team can help you protect your skin year-round.

Why Is Sunscreen So Important?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun damages your skin at the cellular level. Long-term exposure without protection increases your risk of:

  • Skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma
  • Premature aging, like wrinkles, sun spots, and sagging skin
  • Hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone
  • Sunburns, which damage the skin barrier and increase cancer risk

Wearing sunscreen daily (yes, even in winter or on cloudy days) helps block these harmful rays and significantly reduces your long-term risk.

Common Sunscreen Myths: Debunked

Myth 1: “I don’t need sunscreen if it’s cloudy.”
False! Up to 80% of UV rays still penetrate clouds.

Myth 2: “People with darker skin don’t need sunscreen.”
Everyone, regardless of skin tone, is susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer. Darker skin may have more natural melanin protection, but it’s not immune.

Myth 3: “Makeup with SPF is enough.”
Makeup with SPF can help, but it’s rarely applied in the thick enough layer needed for full protection. Use a dedicated sunscreen underneath for best results.

Myth 4: “I only need sunscreen at the beach or pool.”
Everyday activities, like walking the dog, driving, sitting by a window, can expose you to harmful UV rays.

How to Choose the Right Sunscreen

Choosing the right sunscreen depends on your skin type, lifestyle, and preferences. Here’s what to look for:

  • Broad-spectrum protection: Blocks both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays
  • SPF 30 or higher: SPF 30 blocks ~97% of UVB rays
  • Water-resistant: Especially if you’re swimming or sweating
  • Formulation that fits your skin type:
    • Sensitive skin: Look for physical (mineral) sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide
    • Oily/acne-prone skin: Use oil-free, non-comedogenic formula
    • Dry skin: Choose sunscreens with added moisturizers like glycerin or hyaluronic acid

Sunscreen Picks from Bethany Medical Clinic’s Dermatologist: Ashley Doerler, P.A.

Looking for some guidance? One of our expert dermatologists, Ashley Doerler, P.A., shares some of her go-to sunscreen recommendations below for our patients! A native Long Islander and beach lover, Ashley understands the importance of quality skincare and protection. Her picks are rooted in both clinical experience and real-world use. Here are a few of her faves:

EltaMD UV Clear – “This is one of my favorite sunscreens for daily use, especially in sensitive, acne or rosacea-prone skin. This hybrid sunscreen is lightweight but effective (with an SPF of 46) and combines a mixture of mineral and chemical ingredients for full spectrum coverage. There’s a tinted and non-tinted version for flawless blend-able coverage regardless of your skin type. The reason this sunscreen is so great for those with sensitive skin or prone to breakouts is that it contains 5% niacinamide (vitamin B3) which is anti-inflammatory but can also help brighten the skin and fade pigmentation over time.”

SkinBetter Science Sunbetter Tone Smart SPF 75 Tinted Mineral Sunscreen – “This is another favorite sunscreen for daily use, but is also a great option for beach days. This 100% mineral sunscreen has a tint that allows it to blend well into any skin tone. The benefit of mineral-based sunscreens is that they are free of chemicals, they serve as a physical blocker of harmful UV rays and their effect begins immediately after applying to the skin (unlike chemical sunscreens, which can take about 15-20 minutes to become effective). This sunscreen is great for daily use in its ability to protect the skin from other sources, such as blue light, pollution and infrared rays.”

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Ultra Light Sunscreen Flight SPF 40-50 – “Another mineral-based sunscreen, this one can be used all over the body for immediate sun protection. It is fragrance-free, making it great for sensitive skin. There are multiple tinted shades so it can blend well with any skin type and doesn’t leave a white “cast” on the skin. It’s also water resistant.”

ISDINCEUTICS Mineral Brush SPF 50– “Because reapplication of sunscreen throughout the day is a must! This brush on mineral sunscreen makes reapplication a breeze. With the same protection as its fluid counterparts, it’s also a great tool for absorbing oil and refreshing make-up mid-day. Another great use for this versatile product is along your hairline to prevent scalp burns.

ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless Ultralight Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 – “What makes this mineral-based sunscreen stand out from others is its inclusion of “DNA Repairsomes,” which actually work to reverse previous/existing sun damage with each application. This product also contains a peptide complex that helps improve collagen and elasticity of the skin, helping to treat fine lines and wrinkles in addition to preventing them.”
